| Fostering a rescued Boxer can be one of the most rewarding experiences you can have!! You'll not only help us rehabilitate our Boxers physically and emotionally but you'll be part of saving a Boxer's life. Many of our Boxers come from shelter situations so they are underweight, sometimes injured, and sometimes they have health issues. We have very little information on them so it is imperative that the foster home be knowledgeable in dog behavior, obedience and basic health issues. Boxers from shelters are required to be in foster care atleast 8 weeks unless it is a very young dog, or puppy. Owner surrendered Boxers time in foster care depends on the dog. Some have excelled at all the new things presented to them while others can take a little more time. The following are requirements to foster one of our dogs: 1. Secure, viable fencing. While I'd love everyone to have a 6' privacy fence <grin>, our Boxers have done very well with 3' chain link. I feel it's important for a dog to see outside it's own yard or you'll be creating a barking situation. Some of our Boxers (Yes Maddie!! Yes Jaxson!!!) are quite proficient at jumping fences. 2. Personal pets must be spayed/neutered and up to date on all vaccinations. They must also be agreeable to someone new coming in :o) Boxers can be quite prey driven when it comes to cats but while I don't search out foster homes with cats I will not deny them. Each situation will have to be evaluated as it arises. 3. Foster homes provide food for the rescued Boxer. That is your only cost as I provide heartworm preventative and cover all veterinary bills. If you have difficulty keeping up on the food, we'll see what we can work out. It may be necessary from time to time for the foster home to take the rescue to the vet clinic if they do not live in Kearney. 4. I do not adopt to families with children under the age of 6 unless they have prior Boxer experience and the same applies to my foster families. 5. A good, solid knowledge base of obedience training is helpful but I, Gary and Angie will be happy to help people. We believe in the Cesar Milan approach to obedience training. If you have any questions, or would like to apply to foster for us, please contact me at boxerrescuer@charter.net Boxer Blessings!! |
